He’s a great storyteller, whether speculating about the origins of the legend, explaining the history of the tower (and ghostly sightings), what it’s like to live there with his family, or best of all, the fascinating ravens themselves. Skaife is only the sixth ravenmaster to hold the position since caring for the ravens was officially designated as a responsibility of the Yeoman Quartermaster in the mid-twentieth century. In The Ravenmaster: My Life with Ravens at the Tower of London, Christopher Skaife shares his first hand experience taking care of the ravens at the historic site. For hundreds of years, the Tower grounds have also been home to the ravens, cared for by Britain’s familiar ceremonial guardians, the Yeoman Warders of Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress the Tower of London, and Members of the Sovereign’s Body Guard of the Yeoman Guard Extraordinary – aka the Beefeaters.
